Good point...I don't have any kind of strict rule on this myself, but I generally don't just ask for names either.
I had already been talking to her for a while, and previous to that excerpt she had asked my name (first...and fairly early on), where I turned the question around on her and she gave me Bertha.
I went on with her on that for several minutes because I didn't believe her...but she never came back to asking my name.
So it was after we had been talking for a while that I came back and said "So are you going to tell me your name?".
Honestly I think most girls would've volunteered it at that point....I'm pretty sure she was just getting off on being difficult that night.
On the other hand, I do see the benefit to letting them be the one who initiates and tells you.
Plus, you're right, I can't think of any time where I've actually gained anything from her giving her name when I ask.
(Though I haven't been very successful with highly direct thus far...so I've been doing mostly indirect)
I think I'll try completely leaving the names talk to the girl and see how that goes.
