I am only 23 and have not been married but I still have been in LTRs. I would say (since learning PUA methods) that the answer lies in the calibration of attraction and comfort. One should strive for an equilibrium in a long term relationship between comfort and attraction but at the same time one must realize that the equilibrium will never remain constant. Therefore, one must constantly balance between attraction and comfort (increasing and decreasing one or the other) in order to keep the relationship healthy. It relates back to the cat string theory. Shine and I have been talking about this a lot lately. We have a pretty good idea of when and where to shift the balance in a broad/general since thus far but do not know how to calibrate the balance all of the time (or for all instances) and we still need/are striving to experience/learn more about this.

You are quite right, MLTR's are quite effective at keeping it alive. I know one swinger couple that brings in a 3rd girl and they have a happy marriage. They act like newly weds.
