I feel status should come from the quality of a person's posts. Such a thing can't be automatically measured, so each person needs to mentally keep track of who says the good stuff and who doesn't.

I've noticed on other forums there is a mechnism to rate other guys by the quality of their post (stylelife.com and thesanfranciscolair.com has this in their forums). If an add-on can be found for this type of forum, then that would be ideal.

Yeah, I would also second some sort of ebaylike feedback/prop point system based on quality of a post, attendence to an event, or whatever. The points can be given by other members of the board.

stylelife has a rating system that allows members to give points for good posts. No one uses it.
