scent of a man

So the other day, a debate spurred between two psychologists and myself. It started with a debate about aroma therapy and the effects on mental states. This spurred another debate which I often argue with members of the community. It just so happens that it was in a recent issue of GQ magazine, and so I pointed it out. The argument I have is that too many people in the community have a cologne collection that rivals a Martha Stewart cookbook. Humans have multiple senses, and as such one should look to stimulate as many of these senses as possible. We change our looks to be visually appealing, we break barriers with the sense of touch, We learn to say the right things to stimulate the sense of sound. All of these things are there to trigger emotions (or attraction switches). So it goes without saying the sense of smell should also be considered. Contrary to the standard PUA belief, smelling good just isn't enough.

How can we take the sense of smell and create something to benefit the game? Well it is said that we create tags or markers that make us familiar with people. For example every time I smell pumpkin pie I relate it to my moms thanksgiving dinner. The same registry goes without saying with people. When a person wears A scent, not multiple scents, over time that scent will begin to register with you. A girl at work or school your trying to seduce will smell a clean pleasant aroma and think about your interactions. Even if she smells that scent away from you. Now, one can make the debate that it doesn’t help your night game or girls you just met as they have no registry of you to begin with. Others will make the debate that if she registers that scent with a bad experience like the guy that raped her, you will be blown out of the set. Lets not over react as subconsciously I don’t think it goes this deep. The debate that can be argued, is that certain scents create certain emotions. Jasmine is known to have a calming effect, and so forth. We then debated the fact that different people react differently to smells. Some people love the smell of weed, however, it makes me want to puke.

When picking a cologne, use the scent of smell not the color of the bottle, or price. Close your eyes as you smell it and pay close attention to how it makes you feel. Sniff the coffee beans between scents to clear your sinus’. And ask what ingredients make the scent. Do a little research as to what emotion that scent is supposed to evoke. So what does all of this mean? Well its open to interpretation but my take is that you should stick with one scent. The dosage as follows: 1 sprits on the wrist and rub the two together, one on the front of your body and one on the back. Tweak as needed as strengths of colognes vary. I tend to stay away from oil based colognes, and stick to the alcohol based ones. Although the scent lasts longer, oil based colognes can stain your clothes and the scent options are limited. Designers do not make their scents in an oil based form as it is more costly to produce among other reasons.

Remember it’s the details that set PUAs apart. Going above and beyond to make ourselves better in everyway, so if your going to spend time tweaking your image and behaviors, think what else can be done to give you the edge over others. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this topic.

Scent is definitely important, and not just avoiding smelling bad, but going to the trouble to smell good.

It's definitely true that women will associate smells. I have a small bowl where I put my various pieces of jewelry (rings, necklace, watch, etc) when I'm not wearing them. I have had women who like to go over to it and smell it.

One time, a long time ago, I left my necklace at a girl's place, and she said she wanted to keep it because of how it smelled. (Of course I said no.)

I like my cologne, but I don't believe it's significantly superior to the alternatives. But it is important to wear something good.

You get the right cologne and it will drive the women crazy. If your not getting compliments on it then your not wearing enough or it just smells average. I wear a certain one that I rarely don't get complimented on it. And hell no I'm not telling you slackers what it is either!

i agree with carmel. scent can trigger very strong memories and emotions, some good and some bad. i've dated girls who always say "i miss the way you smell" and if you associate your scent with a feeling of joy and happiness, when she smells that on you, it will evoke that feeling again. i think its best to have a regular cologne and mix it up every once in a while with variations. I have a total of about 7 different fragrances with 2 getting most of the action.

in addition to what carmel said, cologne has three notes...

1st note: is the initial smell of the cologne...spray it on the little sheet the counter provides and this initial smell is the 1st note.

2nd note: let the paper dry for about 15 minutes (make sure you take a sniff of the beans inbetween notes to clear your nasal and refresh your sense of smell). this is the second note.

3rd and most important note: let the paper dry for at least 45 -1 hour. this is the most important smell because this is what most people will smell on you. the other two are important, but this is the scent that lingers with you for most of the day.

if you like all three notes, then this cologne is a good choice. know that all three notes will smell similar with a slight variance in smell.

some additional tips: spray cologne on pulse spots. wrists and side of the neck; this acctually enhances the scent.

scent for the seasons: you want to wear certain colognes for certain seasons. something fresh and light for spring. something a little more bold for winter. experiment to see what is best for you.

dont buy cologne because it smells good on someone else. spray cologne DIRECTLY on your skin and wait for the 3rd note mentioned above. scents will blend with your natural body oils and give off a unique scent, specifit to you (though similar to anyone else who wears the same brand). something may smell good on someone else but very different on you.

last, but not least: less is more. if a person can smell the 3rd note from 3 ft away, you're wearing too much. only people who are close to you (in your personal space) should be able to smell you. this has been consistently proven in all surveys as one of the biggest turnoff for women: TOO MUCH COLOGNE
