I thought the same thing. Using the jargon was bad and easy to make fun of.

I am probably going to get shot over this by all of you but I was actually disappointed with Mystery last night.

Anyone who has done any public speaking at all knows that you should speak to the lowest common denominator. In this case, it was the TV viewers who know nothing about the PU community.

Mystery had an opportunity to do some good for the community - stage the book as a tool for those who need help with basic dating skills and are looking to improve themselves.

Overall, I thought Mystery did a good job of holding his own against Conan but I don't think he promoted the book or the community well. Conan was being funny as he is paid to do and PU is an easy target for Conan to get some laughs. I actually laughed at the goggles joke as it WAS funny.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a Mystery hater. In fact, I have seen some videos of him out and about and he juggles so many complex PU tactics at once it is pretty amazing. It was astonishing and admirable the way he pushed through several shit tests in one video I saw. However, I don't think he came across all that well on Conan. Not that I could do any better on national TV.....

i agree, he did not do himself any favors... conan was being conan... if you arent a big celeb you are gonna get ripped... even then you still get a hard time, which is why conan doesnt get many big guests (at least he didnt when i watched him)... he cares more about his audience then kissing someones ass to get better guests... mystery should have done a little research because im sure he did not sell many books to those who dont know about the community from that appearance... the only ones i could see buying it after seeing that are truely desperate people who never thought of buying a book on that topic before

The other mistake I think Mystery made was making fun of people who don't leave the house. We all know he seems to care about his students. For some reason he jumped into Conan's frame and made a joke about guys who aren't socially calibrated. It was a momentary lapse, but it was a big one. I think he should have said something like, "I have met a lot of great guys who just aren't confident enough to go to public gatherings and talk to women. It makes me happy when I can help them overcome that fear and insecurity, because they really are great guys." That would have shown that he was not willing to jump into Conan's frame and it would have set Conan up as violating social rules. Plus, many of Conan's viewers would probably relate to that.

I didn't watch and the video was removed from YouTube, but I have mixed feelings about all this publicity. While some of the comments indicate his appearance may not have reflected well on him or the community (if he was speaking PUAese on TV), I don't think that really matters. We don't need to be identified as a group anyway. My bigger concern is with this becoming too mainstream. I'm happy with how things are now: AFCs buy the women drinks, and PUAs seduce them. I'm all for the spread of knowledge, but only when knowledge is sought. I think books and TV appearances do a disservice because they put these ideas into the heads of people who would not otherwise be interested. When you ask "would you like to learn how to have sex with any woman you want?" what straight guy isn't going to be interested and say yes? It gives them false hope that this is a simple no-stress change they can make that will change their lives forever - which is how a lot of the seduction material out there is marketed. At the same time, it inundates the community with non-contributing members who ask questions that have already been asked. And it absolutely saturates clubs, malls, and coffee shops with all the common openers.

Information sharing - and community - is great. But it's better for the people who take the time to seek it out. The mass-commercialization of seduction may also be its demise...

This type of seduction can never become mainstream. It runs counter to cultural norms, so unless the cultural norm changes, seduction will be marginalized and ridiculed wherever the two intersect, just like on Conan. This is perfectly normal and to be expected.

There is still a perceived stigma attached to seeking help with women, and mainstream media publicity will not change it. It may someday become a legitimized, respected area within self-help, but that will probably be several years away and thoroughly sanitized.

As for the common openers becoming obsolete, I don't think so. The Game was a bestseller, and Jealous Girlfriend has already been out for forever. I've never once had a problem with it. The real risk is that the thought of getting called out on it will mess with your head and you'll subcommunicate that fear.

The set of people who know enough to make a difference will always be small. Until the cultural norms change.

they took it off of the link that was posted at the beginning of this thread but you can still view it by googling Conan and Mystery. I thought he did a good job in the interview - you know that is why Conan is there is to make as much possible in his shows humurous. Everybody seemed interested in what mystery had to say and he seemed very calm and poised. I guarantee you Conan was interested in what a seminar must be like afterwards.

As much as I respect mystery, I think you all should be thanking conehead for making mystery look silly.
