There was a show on PBS on this a few months back. One thing I remember from the show is that in most species the females are looking for very specific characteristics in a male and if he doesn't have them....none of the females will mate with him. They are very picky.
some of them have a certain dance they do and it has to be done perfectly in a very specific way.
others look for markings on the male..............it's amazing how picky they are.
Another thing is that the features the females were attracted to were inherently bad features for the males to have, and they theorized that it showed to the women how strong they were to thrive in spite of the obviously detrimental features..........example peacock feathers on the male make them easier for predators to spot...........monkeys with bare chest lose a lot of heat from this area......etc.
