The "who's that girl you're with" part, obviously, but what about the cute part? Maybe it's just my imagination, but there seems something a little condesending when a girl compliments the girl you're with. It's almost as if she's saying "Yeah, she's cute enough for someone like you. Glad you guys are paired up, because I'd never date you." Then again, maybe I'm just being paranoid because I pull this move on women all time.

No. Its not a shit test.
You're reading into it. You basically thinking of something negative as your first reaction to it.
The idea of reframing is something you should consider looking at. Reframe things to mean that every situation has a positive meaning for you.
Do a google search on "NLP and Reframing". Also look for Frames in the community literature.
Like JP2008 said, you can use these things to your advantage as in an introduction of two girls who may become jealous of eachother in your presence.
Other things you can say maintain a frame of YOU ARE THE PRIZE.
Example:
"Who's that girl you're with?"
"I'd tell ya but you'd become jealous and want me so bad." or something....
Its easy for me to type this into a computer. In the real world, you gotta be ready for a quick comeback.
That's why its good to practice a few responses from time to time.
Like when you're alone you can think of responses and what you might say in situations.

LOL...my favorite response to any questions abouit girls I hang out with is the same. I say..." I have to tell you this... I am sooo not into jelousy plotlines" in a mock serious tone and then pause and then a huge smile. Then change the subject.
It keeps them guessing and yes its a reframe.
