Anybody thought of joining this or has joined? I've been considering it, but it's probably just a bunch of empty promises.
This whole health care thing is such a joke. I can't believe Americans are actually going to do this. As somebody who has lived a long time overseas, man, I feel sorry for you guys' future.

In the past, my problem with Republicans has been that they seem to talk out of the side of their mouth. W talked about cutting taxes, and then INCREASED spending on a war investment I doubt I'll ever see any return on.
Look, here's all I want. I want to opt OUT of medicare, medicade, obamacare, social security, 1 trillion dollar army, etc etc etc. If you want it, YOU pay in. I want to opt out and keep my money.
That's what I have insurance and a pension savings account for!! For chirst's sake. And I'll take my chances with the terrorists, thanks. Not really that worried about it.

Oh yeah, and here you can see that 90% of government spending is on the military, and social programs for old people (social security, health and human services) and bailout/debt interest.
Taxes for things like teachers, roads, spaceships, those are much better. Those things are relatively cheap.

I'm fine with defense spending because it's outlined in the Constitution that the Federal government is responsible for national defense.
It's the ponzi schemes that I don't like: Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.
As well as any form of the redistribution of wealth. What's mine is mine, I earned it, I should be able to keep it.
I think we should have a consumption based tax. If you spend and engage in commerce then you're, presumably, using public resources more frequently. Taxing income is borderline unconstitutional. Technically it's slavery.

Right on bro. Except the defense part. I agree that we need to spend on it per the constituion, but right now it's at a whopping 700 billion per year and we have TWO oceans to our right and left, Canada to the north.
Every single other point though, 100% agreement. But what can we do to make them cut spending? That's the frustrating part.

The problem that America is having is that everyone in this country is interdependant on everyone else. You are dependant on the farmers to grow your food and thus are dependant on the people that make their equipment.
You are dependant on the food processors (if you eat boxed foods etc..) and the workers there in those plants.
Just about anything you have or have come to know is made or done by someone else, likely from India or China or Mexico.
We don't actually make very much here anymore and have thus become a nation of would be managers and people who are entitled to a certain lifestyle when we aren't.
The major problem America has is that we have grown to dependant on OTHERS to do shit for us. The jackass that cut you off was running late to his trash pick up job to go pick up your trash.
This entire god forsaken society is so fucking intertwined it makes me sick to think about it. All the problems in America can be traced back to people becoming dependant on others to one degree or another and a lack of some sort of morals.
The tea parties are ok, and are a decent start, lord knows Beck is doing a good job mobilizing, but I seriously doubt we will ever get to the root of the problems, i.e. entitlement mentalities, and interdependancies on one another.
Your best bet I would say is to say, fuck everyone else. I would start making sure I am smart and able enough to do anything I need in order to maintain my standard of living for me and those around me and I will align with like people. Everyone else can fly a kite. Obviously having social awareness falls into this catagory.

That can be amended. But still, the definitions of what "income" are, are somewhat vague and refer you to many places in the actual law. The income tax code is FULL of discrimantory activities. There is no equal treatment under the law. If you have kids, you pay less tax. If you don't have children, you pay more, thus subsidizing someone else's life decisions. If you own a home, you pay less tax. If you have a mortgage, you pay less tax. If you make MORE money, you pay a HIGHER percentage. After certain income levels, you start losing deductions. If you don't make enough money AND you have children, then you pay NEGATIVE taxes (i.e. WE pay THEM).
It's full of unconstitutional behaviors...it's discrimination of SUCCESS. If you're successful, you are treated differently. One could easily argue that that violates civil rights laws. Every man created equal...but not treated equally? Right.

The other day I was in a board meeting at the office and the HR director said that our insurance premiums will be going up because we had a lot of claims made throughout the company. I'm sitting here thinking to myself, I went to the doctor a total of 4 times (routine shit too), eye doctor once, and dentist twice. I try to eat right, I work out regularly, I don't smoke, I don't do drugs (besides the roids...which has actually made me healthier), and I don't partake in unnecessary risks. So, why the fuck is MY premium going up? I did everything right. It's the fat, out of shape individuals at my company that are unhealthy that negatively impacted my life. That, fucking sucks...
BUT, there's two things that make this OK to me. First, I'm dealing with a private institution, not the government. And, secondly, I have made a voluntary decision to be a member of this insurance pool.
When it's voluntary and through the private sector, I'm totally fine with interconnectedness. Without the specialization of labor, our standard of living would suck. The cost of having a higher standard of living is relying on others to provide whatever it is that you require. This is where the profit motive comes into play. If the person supplying you with what you want is making a profit off of that transaction, then virtually all of your transactions should occur without a hitch.
This is why the government can't do anything right. No incentive. You get what you get when they decide to give it to you.

Yeah, but our problem is that we have a legal system based on precedent. Nothing wrong with that compared to other systems, but the problem is that precedent builds on itself and creates momentum and long-run trends. Sadly, that momentum has been going toward the left since the Great Depression, which is a bit out of step with the general population. It doesn't matter what the constitution says word-for-word when the folks whose job it is to interpret the laws are trained to do so in the law schools and by their peers in one specific way. I for one think that sucks.

Not to be a negative Ed, but here's how screwed we really are. We have nearly 14 TRILLION dollars of external debt, mostly to Asia and the Middle East. That's about 92% of the size of the GDP of our nation.
We've been borrowing at that rate based on "forecasts" of future economic growth (our leaders assumed that our output will grow and catch up to our borrowing), but as growth is slowing down, we're finding ourselves in some trouble.
Well, right now Treasury Bills are paying 0% interest. But as the economy begins to recover, we will start paying interest on that debt again or suffer massive economic problems related to our banking system. Well, interest payments on 14 trillion dollars to foreign countries are going to be a heavy burden, and we will need to create dollars to pay it off.
What will almost inevitably happen without some serious economic gymnastics is that foreigners will lose confidence in the buying power of the dollar. That will lead to inflation, kind of like we saw in the 1970's.
Or, at the very least, it will lead to us shipping a great deal of wealth overseas to our debtors in the form of annual interest payments.
