The line in my sig is about this. When it comes to any conversation you have with a female, the question is, "where does it get you?" If it builds connection, then cool. If it doesn't then drop it. If you're a conservative republican and she is a democrat, the best common ground is the need to vote no matter what your belief. If she doesn't care to vote then she probably won't talk politics. If she does care about politics but doesn't vote then it's about being heard then activism is the common ground.
Religion can be turned to the importance of belief, that even works for atheists. Oh, and don't forget about the metaphysics. I have a great conversation thread about that
Finally sex. If it's playful inuendo and double entendra, naughty is fun, "i like anal" can generally be avoided.
