Conveying Your Identity Through Fashion

Postby Serendipitous » Tue Jun 15, 2010 12:33 pm

One of the first and easiest things newcomers to the community can take care of is their fashion. Some guys know who they are and maybe only need to polish up their look a bit; Some guys don't know who they are and need to figure out who they want to be; And some guys want to change and be someone else. In either of these cases, the best thing they can do is decide who they want to be and then try and build their wardrobe around that identity. Enter this list.

I know it's not complete, don't know if it ever will be, but I hope that if any of you reading this come up with ideas, that you'll share them here. Just post the male identity and a great picture to go with it. If you find/have/know about better pictures than I have (the gamer one isn't that great I have to admit), please post a better one.

The Musician

There are many different kinds of music and many different identities that vastly
differ between each genre. Here is a list to get us started, again, feel free to add
to it with a great picture.

Punk Rocker
Image
Street punks tend to have a lot of patches, crazy hair styles, Doc Marten boots,
patches, leather bracelets, belts, jean jackets or vests covered in.. did I say
patches?

Metalhead
Image
Metalheads also have a lot of patches, long hair, wear mostly black, band shirts,
jeans, boots, metal jewelry, wallet chains, large rings, bullet belts and leather
or denim jackets.

Rockstar
Image
The Rockstar isn't as adorned as Metalhead or Punk, and tends to be just a little
more refined than both of the above, though not always.

Emo Guy
Image
Emo Guy crosses Punk, Rockstar and Metalhead, but they are more refined than
all of the above and tend to have much more trendy haircuts. All of the above
tend to wear boots for footwear.

Rastafarian
Image
Dreadlocks, baggy clothes and red, yellow and green are staple-colors.
Oh, and a fat, half-smoked joint.

Country Star
Image
A nice mix of cowboy and metrosexual, the Country Star is a stylish wonder
from parts of the country that are known for.. well.. never mind.

Grunge/Alternative Guy
Image
Tends to be more mainstream and plain in his attire. Sneakers are typical in
place of boots. Will also don flannels and Chucks (Converse sneakers).

Mall Goth
Image
Typically messy overall, baggy pants, boots, accessories, bad hair color. Not as
refined as the Elegant Goth.

Elegant Goth
Image
Combines elements of punk and new wave styles. Makeup, unique hair styles
and formal wear (causal, Victorian, modern or futuristic in nature) define the
goth.

Rapper
Image
Baggy jeans, loose fitting clothes, poofy jackets, tank tops, big jewelry, large
belt buckles, baseball caps and Timberland boots are all worn by this type of
guy. There are also men who are more refined and wear trendy suits and higher
end shoes.

Business Man
Image
Won't catch him without a suit on much, may catch him without a tie when
dressed casually, may wear a blazer in place of a jacket.

Nerd/Geek
Image
Nerdy glasses, plain clothes and sneakers have replaced the plaid shirts and
pocket protectors.

Modern Hippie
Image
Dreadlocks are typical but not always. Wears brandless names, typically kahki
cargo pants/shorts and a plain colored t-shirt.

Gamer
Image
Harder to describe because gamers can also fall into other categories, but when
they aren't part of other tribes, they tend to wear plain clothes and are typically
out of style.

Skater
Image
Ball caps, sneakers, cargo shorts and skater-brand t-shirts are the usual.

Metro Sexual
Image
Has a more refined sense of style and might combine elements of another style
into his dress. Knows the rules of fashion, sometimes well enough to break
them. Fashionable jeans, shirts and shoes, will accessorize with bracelets, necklaces watches, rings and belt buckles.

Fashion Elite
Image
A step above the Metro Sexual, the Fashion Elitist pays greater attention to
detail, color coordination and accessories.

Cowboy
Image
Blue jeans, cowboy boots and hat, large belt buckles and button up shirts define
the cowboy.

Jock
Image
Run of the mill jeans, sneakers and sports jerseys characterize the jock.

Preppie
Image
Argyle sweaters, khakis, pennt loafers and blazers illustrate preppy attire.

Douche Bags
Image
I was going to call them meatheads but I didn't like that as much as douche
bags. Typically wear Ed Hardy & Affliction brands, tank tops or t-shirts with
annoying sayings on them, most often have fashionable jeans. Don't forget
sunglasses at night. How else is he going to hide that black eye?

Guido
Image
Orange skin tones, waxed eyebrows, too much hair product. Why? Finely
trimmed facial hair but the designs are usually lame. Fashion wise, anywhere
between Metro Sexual, Douche Bag and Fashion Elite.

Surfer
Image
Longer wavy hair, beach trunks, t-shirts, sunglasses, sandals and a necklace
dubs the surfer.

College Kid
Image
Ball caps, striped shirts, khaki shorts and sneakers. Also called "The Uniform"
because there are far too many guys who dress like this.

Body Builder
Image
Usually in tank tops to show off his physique, will wear brand names of his
industry, jeans and sneakers. (This is Jay Cutler from Mass. I've met him.)

Athlete
Image
A little different than the body builder, the Athlete wears sneakers, tank tops and
t-shirts and gym shorts, and not all the time.

Party Guy
Image
Hawaiian shirts, usually an ok haircut, khaki shorts and sandals or "The Uniform".
Rarely seen without a beer/drink..

Redneck
Image
Plaid/flannel shirts, blue jeans and ball caps with an adjustable strap and white
netting. Usually in tow with a relative/girlfriend.

Slob
Image
Ugh, bad t-shirts, sweat pants and old sneakers. Clothes usually have stains
from god-knows-what.

Sports Fan
Image
Dons clothing that displays his team(s) of choice, sneakers, ball caps khaki
shorts or jeans.

Again, this is not the most detailed, specifically accurate or complete list. If you have something to add, please do! :)

Good list though I'd add
Image
Harajuku- high fashion meets punk rock meets emo. This small Japanese district still set most of the "cool" fashion trends for the world.

Very interesting. I see the punk and emo clearly. I'm not seeing the high end fashion clearly. Am I missing something?

By high fashion i mean Haute couture It's a little more evident in designers like Victoria Jackson or along the popular takeshita-dori. However you are correct it really is "street fashion".
