Cell Phone

I have been thinking of switching cell phones. I've had a Treo650 for a while. I don't use enough of the PDA features to warrant carrying around this clunky thing. I want to get an EVDO phone for fast Web browsing, which the Treo650 is horrible at.

So, I was thinking about getting the Helio Ocean. Helio a good deal, because all their plans have unlimited texting and browsing. Their devices have GPS with Google Maps and all the main IM programs. Plus the Ocean has a cool dual slide design. I like that it's a device the girls will want to play with while they enter their numbers into it.

Does anybody here have Helio service?

heres a Snap Judgements: Helio Ocean vs. Apple iPhone by gizmodo.

Adam Frucci wrote:And, let's face it, the Ocean is butt-ugly compared with the iPhone. So I think what it comes down to is this: do you want a stylish music player/phone combo, or do you want a hot smartphone? Because it seems to me that if you want a slick phone that'll play music, the iPhone is the clear choice. But if you want a full-featured phone for checking email and surfing the Web and plan to keep a standalone MP3 player in your other pocket, the Ocean is obviously the winner.

personally i wouldn't buy a iphone just because apple tries to do two things at once.

Whoa, I've never heard of Helio before! Sweet Jesus (that would be Jesus my lawnboy, not Jesus of Nazareth...) that service looks nice!

You're thinking of getting rid of your Treo?!?!?!? There's no way I could think of doing without mine. Of course, I use a lot of the PDA/PIM functions on mine. Yes, web browsing is slow, but it's not something I do that often.

I keep a few games on mine, plus a background of my bike as my wallpaper. So there's plenty on there to keep a chick entertained if she picks it up to put her number in (or other things, but we're not here to discuss that  )

I also have the program PalmaSutra that chicks LOVE to play around with. There has yet to be a chick that hasn't started it, spent around 10 minutes, and then is horny as hell!

I never had any games on my Treo that I liked. I never heard of PalmaSutra though. I use the PDA functions only a little, to keep track of meetings, but they're mostly meetings that happen while I'm at work, so I can just use Outlook on my computer for that.

The Helio Ocean has a 2megapixel camera with video. The Web access is supposed to be really fast, so I would probably use the Web more if it didn't take 3 minutes to get a page, plus Helio gives unlimited downloads while Sprint charges me for the minutes I'm connected I think (I could be wrong about that though). I've also found myself texting a lot, so I always go over the allotted number of messages, which gets expensive.

All in all, I stand to save a bunch of money and I get a really cool phone that is smaller than the Treo. However, I would have to break my contract with Sprint, which would cost me another $150.

I'm with Cingular, so I have their unlimited data plan, and 3000 text messages per month. Plenty for my uses!!

I haven't really looked into the Helio, but it sounds like a cool little device. When I upgraded to my 680 from my 650, I sold my 650 on Craigslist for like $200. Keep that in mind!!

If you decide to keep the Treo, and want a copy of Palmasutra, I'll beam you a copy next time I see you.

I don't want to give any more details about the deal, because I don't want to violate any board rules. I'm not trying to spam the board trying to sell anything. I just want to help people save some money if they do buy one.

If you're willing to wait, you might want to check out this new open source
based phone that should be shipping in Spetember.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Main_Page

The first gen hardware design will be touchscreen based like the Iphone, but
since it's open source and Linux based, you'll be able to mod/hack it, and
install whatever apps you want on it. So MP3 player, video player, text
viewer, web browser, etc...
