Is there such a thing as semi-slavery?

But what makes that semi slavery? They're paying you right?

Semi means 'partial, partially, somewhat' and could concievably be placed in front of any word. Can someone be a partial slave? Sure. Maybe you can be more specific about what you mean by semi-slavery?

What I would mean is partially (insert definition of slavery here).

So I guess the question would hinge on what one would consider actual slavery.

So, I know what dictionaries say, but what is the common understanding of the word?

The bondage would have to be non-negotiable for it to be anything like slavery, but it might not cover all aspects of your life, and in that way could be partial.

Like if you go to jail, you are entirely bound physically, but for a limited time.

Or if you are a US citizen, you are bound to pay taxes, but you are free in some other ways.

Or if you are married, you are financially and sexually bound (let's say) but you still have other freedoms. Though this is more like a contract because the parties do have the freedom to break the bond, which is not true slavery.

So there would have to be some sort of legal punishment for breaking bondage should the person wish to "free" themselves?

So, like with slaves back in the civil war days, they were considered chattel. Their labor was also not their own and they had no right to what they produced (until sharecropping).

So it could be possible to assign something like a percent to a term like slavery where a person could be x% part enslaved while the other y part isnt.

It sounds like you are explaining different ways one could be enslaved.

Also, I understand this all may seem redundant, but what I am trying to do, is see what society (meaning my peers and people I am surrounded with) thinks in regards to freedom v. slavery.

I am trying to figure out what common consensus is in regards to the term "partial slavery". Just so you know, I know I ask redundant questions but please bare with me.
