Dallas Bars

After hearing about Firewater closing, I got to wondering why some bars make it and others don't.
I always enjoyed the outdoor concerts at Firewater and will miss the place. Their Halloween costume shows and the Back in Black concerts rocked. I've read that one of the guys behind Firewater will reopen Trees in Deep Ellum.

I also got to thinking about Black Finn and Sherlocks. Two similar bars, located in close proximity to each other.
Sherlocks never has a cover charge, always has a band, and has decent drink prices. Black Finn doesn't have a band, no dance floor, over crowded, loud, and gets away with a charging a cover. Plus the parking sucks at Black Finn. Its tough to get a drink in the place.

Both places are overran with sausage. But any hooters.........how does Black Finn get away with what they do?

Disagree... most nights I've hit blackfinn 1/4 of the room at least is dancing to the DJ music... also never had much more of a problem getting a drink there when it's busy than at locks.

Not sure how blackfinn gets away with it, but not only do they charge -- they usually have better quality women. Perhaps because of the cover :)

Yeah with any business it is going to be hit or miss. Some people luck out but understand most businesses fail. It is much harder to run a business than you think.

The first brick and mortar I owned I didn't take a salary for 18 months. Imagine working 70 hour weeks for FREE.

Blackfinn is nicer IMO than Locks. Is it worth a cover? Well I hate covers as much as anyone but I do think the quality of women allows for this. On any given weekend I think the average of the room is at least 1 point higher than locks. The drinks are a little more but when you are comparing $5.50 to $6.00 is there really a difference?

Either way I think the two places are different enough that you are going to pull enough people. Both these places will continue to strive for a long time I would imagine.

Even though my moral beliefs won't allow me to own a bar(I know ironic considering I go to them) I would love to see the numbers some day on some bars. I know some of them have got to just be crazy cash cows. I mean most of these bars we see you can put together for 100-300k with ease since you are just renting the spot. That is such a small amount of money when you are going to have mega revenue numbers.
