Unlike some of you, i'm not from Texas. I've spent half my life in California, the other half in Chicago. I just recently started living here. Texans get stereotyped everywhere, Cowboy boots, cowboy hat, etc. etc. I really wanted to play off that. here is the opener...
I turn over my shoulder and say, "What's with all the sushi bars here in dallas, aren't yall texans supposed to be about the steak and grits?" With a playful tone, and accenting the "Yall", the set will believe your talking to them and respond, cut them off, and mention that you were asking someone else, but now your asking them, then repeat the question to the set.
the great thing about this opener is the information you recieve, when faced with a stereotype, people feel the need to distant themselves from that stereotype and offer, almost qualify themselves with useful info. responses might be, " well actually I'm originally from Michigan", " I'm just visiting from Austin" "I know, what is the deal with all the sushi bars" or "I hate/love sushi", what's really humorous, sometimes when I open with this, when it comes time to bounce or time bridge, It usually leads to a sushi bar.
