I’m sitting in the BN café studying for a History final. (Have ya’ll noticed I like this place.) I’m tired of looking over the material so I get up to walk around. I passed a couple of sets I wasn’t interested in opening. Then I see a two set in the Astrology section. I thought it would be funny to ask them what their sign was, so I grabbed the Astrology for Dummies book as I walked up and ask.

Me: So what’s ya’ll’s sign?
Them: Giggling… giggling… giggling.
Me: Is this the only section you think that would work as a line?
Girl A: Yeah.
Girl B: (On the phone) Where are you?
Me: So do ya’ll actually read this stuff.
Girl A: No.

There was no hook point. I heard the friend they were on the phone with approach behind me then like a flock of wa was they all flittered off. Too bad for them.

I walk around the corner and grab a Spark Chart on poetry. I’m looking at this as I make my way back towards the café. I see a slender girl in a short khaki skirt and a green button down top, red hair and glasses. I feel this sudden need to know her. She is holding three books. I reach out with my Spark Chart and tap the edge of her books.

Me: What are you reading?
Her: Oh… Supernatural… Blah… The Melancholy Blah and blah blah blah. (She holds up each book as she tells me about it. The names escape me but they where all weird.)
Me: Oh, well those are all kind of creepy sounding.
Her: Yeah, well I’m into that stuff.
Me: Oh, so do you like Edgar Allan Poe?
Her: Yeah, I love Poe.
Me: Did you read his short story Ligiea?

We fluff about Poe for a minute. She actually impresses me by knowing that Poe invented the detective story.

Me: So what do you do?
Her: I’m a student. I’ll be going into North Westerns nursing program… blah blah.
Me: Really… (I briefly mention having worked at the Cancer Center and WK north)
She said something about not being from around here and that she is from Missouri.

Me: So do you know who lived in Hannibal, Missouri?
She looked off for a minute then said Mark Twain.
Me: Wow, that’s impressive.
She asked if I worked there. I thought this was funny because of how I looked at the moment. I told her I was there studying and had gotten bored.

Her: So you decided to come accost me on my reading?
Me: Yes. Yes, I just had to. Um… would you like to get some coffee some time?

She gave me her number then asked me for mine.

And to top this off, I’m not dressed well at all. I’m wearing an old shirt with a couple holes in it that says, “I do what the voices in my head tell me to do.” That alone should blow me out but it didn’t. I also haven’t shaved in a couple days. I look like a bum but she gave me her number anyway.

I’m thinking about when I call her saying something like:

“You know, when I got home and looked in the mirror I realized how rough I looked from not having shaved and how I was dressed. And you still gave me your number. Now I’m seriously questioning your standards…”

We’ll see.

It's bad because you're making excuses for how you looked; however, it's good because you're screening HER for it. As long as you don't sound apologetic, that could work.

It's bad because you're making excuses for how you looked; however, it's good because you're screening HER for it. As long as you don't sound apologetic, that could work.

Def agree with Rhody here. Also, you're telling her she is lowering her standards for YOU? You should exceed her standards even if you were dressed like a homeless person.

Yeah, my thoughts were to make fun of her because of it. But I totaly see how that could back fire. I think when I call her I'm not gonna try to be funny. I'm just mainly gonna focus on logistics of getting together with her. It will likely be a short conversation.
