Night out in Addison

Postby Neil » Sat Aug 25, 2007 2:23 pm

I just thought I would make my first field report. Last night I wanted to see how many sets I could open, and that was pretty much my only goal for the night. I didn't care where it went or what happened. I just wanted to work on opening sets. I ended up successfully opening a total of 13 sets for the night at two different places.

The crazy thing about all of this is that I went out in Addison exactly a week ago, and I was the big AFC that went directly to the bar and never spoke to anyone that was not in my group. So, as you can see, having a little material and understanding how to open sets helped me tremendously.

I was opening sets from 2 - 6 people, including just going up to all men sets just to see how effective that was in case I ever needed to up my social status for some other female sets.

I went to Bennigans Sport to start. I work for the company in their corporate offices, so I knew that all of the staff would be coming up to me talking to me which would increase my social status. The only problem was there was hardly anyone there. I opened a couple of sets there, but nothing to get excited about since pretty much the only people who were there were eating and leaving. So, I was hanging out at the bar with a manager for one of our stores, and I met a guy that was going to head over to Logans. Ends up he and I go to Logans. Cool thing is that this guy knows all of the staff at Logans, and so I feel he is going to be a good wingman for this place.

So, two of the sets stand out to me. The first set I opened there was more of a confidence builder for me than anything else, so I opened a HB 5 and 6. I just used an opinion opener, and it went something like this:

Me: Can I get your opinion on something real quick?
HB 6: Sure
Me: I have a friend who is about to get married. His wife is going to be having strippers at here bachellorette party, but she told him that he can not have any. Do you think that is right?
HB 5: No, there shouldn't be a double standard like that.
HB 6: Yea, she shouldn't be putting that kind of restriction on him if she is going to be doing it.
Me: I totally agree with that.

blah blah blah blah

Me: Ok, here is the clincher though. He has cheated on her before with a stripper.
HB 6: Oh, well that changes the whole thing. I totally agree that he shouldn't have strippers there either if that is the case.
Me: But, if she doesn't trust him, then why would she marry him
HB 5: You make a good point there.

blah blah

HB 6: Why don't you sit down and stay awhile
Me: Well, I have to get back to my friend, but I will stop by later if I can.

I was about to get out of there, but the guy I was with walked up. I ended up sitting there and talking to them for about 45 minutes before I got up and left. I was having a great time, everyone was laughing and having a good time, but I knew that I was not there to "hook up" and I just wanted to open as many sets as I could. But, it was definitely a good confidence builder for me.

The other that stands out in my mind was incredibly fun.

There was a HB 9 and 3 standing together near the restrooms. I had seen them a couple of times when I was going to the restroom, and the 9 kept getting hit on and no one was talking to the 3. I decided to turn the 9 on her head and get a reaction out of her. So, I saw her talking to a guy, and I wanted to see if I could get her to get rid of him and talk to me.

So, I walk over there and immediately ask the 3 the same opinion opener that I asked the other set.

HB 3: No, I don't think it is right. She shouldn't be having a double standard like that. blah blah
Me: But, the clincher is that he has cheated on her with a stripper before.
HB 3: Oh, that changes everything.

At this time, the HB 9 has gotten rid of the other guy and literally grabs my arm and says, "I want to hear what y'all are talking about."

Me: I look over at her, and then back to the HB 3 and say, "Wow, you can't take her anywhere, she just interrupts any conversation you are trying to have." HB 3 laughs
HB 9: No, I am sorry, I just wanted to hear what y'all were talking about. Please just tell me.
Me: looking at HB 3, "Should we tell her what we are talking about."
HB 3: Yeah, she gives great advice, tell her.

So, I go through the whole spill again, and she is giving me her opinion. Then the HB 3 says, "But, you didn't tell her the rest of it."
So, I tell her the part about my friend cheating on his fiance' with a stripper, and the HB 9 starts giving me her opinion. The whole time she is talking to me she is playing with her hair and will not look away from my eyes.

I then decide to bail, and tell them that I have to get back to my friends, and thank them for their advice.

I had an incredible time last night, but I just don't really understand what I do after I open and get everyone to laugh. I just start talking and trying to show my personality, but don't really understand how to build the attraction and when to shift.

I welcome any criticism you guys have. Also, if any of you guys want to go out sarging, then definitely let me know. I am up for going out any time I am in town (I travel a lot for work.)

This is an excellent field report first time around. Give yourself some credit for opening sets and, from what it sounds like, getting great IOIs. Sounds like there is potential. Some thoughts...

- Cold opinion openers like "I have a friend who is ..." are OK at first if you lead her along but I would work on some better ad-hoc situational stuff. The goal is to get the girls opening you or covertly requesting an open at least.

Keep opening sets but try this... don't decide the opener until right before you go in and make it relevant to her in that moment. Canned is fine if that is your style (i.e. Brad P horse girl) but make it ABOUT her not your friend or whatever. It may take a few dozen sets of failure (laugh - it is funny when things go horribly wrong) but the upside is enormous because it teaches you to assess the environment quickly and to always be alert for opportunities, invitations, etc.. which is key in cold approach.

- HB <7 sets are totally different to HB7+ sets. I woudn't bother with HB5 and HB6 for cold approach especially in a crowded environment - it lowers my value. People will assume they are my friends / girlfriends and judge accordingly. Dont get me wrong i'm not saying be rude or whatever but if there isn't an HB7+ in the place you are sarging it might be time for a venue change (take the HB7+ with you from this dive) ;)

- always always always kino on open. shoulder or hands is best to start.

good work my man!
