There's the phrase that "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink". Well, it kinda summarized my night. Again, horrendous cold for Dallas, and most members either hibernating or pre-occupied. I was myself caught up in a phone conversation with a college buddy until close to 12 and it was THAT close to calling "screw that; not going out tonight". Then I said no, no man, I'll lead myself to water and if I decide not to drink, I've at least made an effort.
So there I was, driving out of my garage at midnight to uptown (sorry JJE - purgatory was a little far & a little late at that time). I parked in West Village and went straignt to Social House. Not a bad crowd, except every chick has a string of sausages attached. I ordered a beer and watched the last 5 mins of Nuggets-Spurs game and all these douchebags just killed the atmosphere. I was about to get back home when I said "not yet", and decided to hit the Loon and see how it fares on a cold Thursday. Got in, ordered a water, and it was a good crowd except no easy targets could be spotted without dudes already conversing. I just hit up the closest guy and he turned out to be the owner of several real-estate companies. I was ballsy enough to ear a free drink from him (and his gf, as it turned out). We had a nice conversation about the economy and market and all that before he left me with his business card. I then continued down the corridor and hit up a two-set who were about to hop. I just locked eyes with one and opened a conversation, and it turned out they were nurses partying the night away. I was kinda getting wasted (still wondering what that guy ordered for me) but felt enough comfort built up that I just asked for the digits and she willingly gave it out before they got ready to head out. They were a big group and I didn't want to antagonize the other chick in the two set so I didn't escalate (maybe should've, then again I'll be away for the weekend so I was not as motivated). Still, that was a whole lot more than if I had stayed home. That was a fast #-close for me (less than 3-4 mins) and made my short night.
Take home lesson: I'm taking my horse to the river next time regardless of the pre-existing adverse conditions. When I'm there, I can talk myself into not being a douche and actually get something. On the bigger picture, that was the 7th time I went out over the past 9 days starting the pre-Thanksgiving night (this personal record will hold for a while, I think) - if I keep it up, conceivably it'd be hard not to make progress. I guess before Jordan was Jordan and Kobe was Kobe, they couldn't just dial up their shooting percentage by 10% but they damn surely could force themselves to shoot 1000 hoops before going to bed. Same philosophy, we'll see where it leads me.
Will be out in Texas Hill Country until Sunday - y'all have a great weekend shooting chicks!
