In large dating pools or populations, since the brain cannot hold all the data on what is good or what is bad, it makes a snap decision and goes with the easiest option. In this case, its looks.
Its easy to make a comparison between dating partners and pick Jeff over Tom because Jeff is more muscley and has a cute face.
This is just a brain shortcut. Her brain is literally just being lazy. Also in smaller dating pools, it was more "get to know you" type behavior that helped.

This falls right in line with what Cialdini was saying. The Weapons of Influence: Social Proof, Liking, Reciprococity, Commitment and Consistency, Scarcity and Authority are all based on short cuts or someone not thinking.
For example, in the stock market if everyone is selling then a person feels compelled to sell as well.

So looks matter because of the brain and the laziness factor.

Now this does not mean that the best looking guy will always win. It just means that if you're not the best looking guy, then you had better max out as many factors as you can.

A friend of mine once said "Try to be the best dressed guy in the room". So that is one option. Another is to draw attention and thus we have guys like Mystery running around.

Again these are just based on "not thinking" or shortcuts that her mind uses to justify becoming interested in a guy.

Also a smaller dating pool might be a good option as well. There's a dating site caled Eharmony where the girls only get 5 emails a day. Compare that to a site like Plenty Of Fish where the girls get bombarded with emails.
Why should I listen to you when you don't even get laid?
