How To Improve

Basket Ball coach John Wooden broke several records while he was at UCLA, including the all time high for most number of championships wone by a coach (10 for those that are interested. 7 of which were in a row).  He’s attributed his leadership & coaching success to the Four P’s
○ Planning
○ Preparation
○ Practice
○ Performance

Focus on the process, not the results.
○ Focus on your execution plan & stack, not the results. Ex: Focus on talking to as many girls as you can, instead of getting their numbers
○ The better you get the more important this becomes

Planning:
○ You have to set aside the time and commitment level that you want
○ Plan it in your schedule so you have set time for this.
○ Even more important than going out, is setting time for reading articles or practice sessions or for writing fidown your progress

Preparation:
○ Read articles, gain more knowledge, and interpret other people’s feedback

Practice:
○ Practice telling stories in front of the mirror. Record yourself on video so you can see what you’re like.
○ Like my soccer coach always said, “You don’t improve during the playoffs. You improve during your practice drill sessions. Do u think Emitt Smith is thinking about how to improve his pass completion percentage during the Superbowl? No, he’s on autopilot and that’s where I want you to be during the game.”
○ Ask people who have their stuff handled to help you out

Performance:
○ This game time when you are out and about.
○ Even though I said you improve the most outside when you are actually talking to girls, you still have to put considerable time here as well. You’d never win that trophy if you don’t compete at the tournaments, no matter how awesome you are at drill sessions.  And this is where you discover new challenges and new obstacles to overcome.  You’ll get over them in practice but you have to go out to find your sticking points.
○ 50-50 time split between practice & performance I think is ideal
