"Be More Alpha" is the PUA mantra. But what does
Many of us are still under the misconception that Alpha=Bully. Such need not be the case. If you look at leaders of departments within corporations, they are often fun, social people able to at least give an appearance of impartiality and bring people together to get the job done. They are also usually good at framing things in such a way as to meet the needs of the organization as well as their own interests.
In Bulletin 51 from the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity, Kilmartin states the following:
"Sociobiological types often present a hypertrophied stereotype of the male as a naturally aggressive, competitive animal whose sole purpose in life is to fight off other males and mate with as many females as possible. Central to this argument is the assumption that the 'alpha male' at the top of the dominance hierarchy, is a bully who rules the troop using violence and intimidation. de Waal notes that some alphas are indeed bullies, but has also discovered that, in primates, those that use these strategies are usually overthrown by the troop after a short time. In contrast, most alphas are 'populists.' They keep the peace in the troop by breaking up fights and supporting reconciliation after aggression takes place."
This is one of the reasons I like the show "The Sopranos." While they're willing to draw a gun if they need to, most of the time they're just trying to make a buck. This is why they have "sit downs" when territorial conflicts arise. One of my favorite lines is from Uncle Junior. A younger guy is all stirred up saying they need to go and do this and this and that to another gangster. Uncle Junior responds by saying, "Settle down, we're not writing a western here."
