Toasts
I thought it would be a nice, small DHV to know a few toasts. Often in set, someone holds up a glass or bottle as if to toast, but few people actually say a toast. You could buy a book of toasts, but they're probably like joke books, full of unusable garbage. So I have endeavored to uncover as many as I can for free via the Internet. Here are a few I have found and like:
Beer/Drinking
You foam within our glasses, you lusty golden brew,
Whoever imbibes takes fire from you.
The young and the old sing your praises,
Here's to beer,
Here's to cheer,
Here's to beer!
In heaven there is no beer...
That's why we drink ours here.
For every wound, a balm.
For every sorrow, cheer.
For every storm, a calm.
For every thirst, a beer.
Who'd care to be a bee and sip
Sweet nectar from the flower's lip
When he might be a fly and steer
Head first into a glass of beer?
A bird with one wing can't fly. (said while handing a drink to a person who is already holding a drink)
My friends are the best friends
Loyal, willing and able.
Now let’s get to drinking!
All glasses off the table!
Here's to being single...
Drinking doubles...
And seeing triple!
I drink to your health when I'm with you,
I drink to your health when I'm alone,
I drink to your health so often,
I'm starting to worry about my own!
Birthday
Many happy returns of the day of your birth:
Many happy blessings to brighten your pathway on earth;
Many friendships to cheer and provoke you to mirth;
Many feastings and frolics to add to your girth.
May you live to be 100 years, with one extra year to repent.
We drink to your coffin. May it be built from the wood of a hundred year old oak tree that I shall plant tomorrow.
May God grant you many years to live, for sure he must be knowing, the earth has angels all too few and heaven is overflowing...
May the good Lord take a liking to you...
But not too soon!
Luck
May your pockets be heavy—
Your heart be light,
And may good luck pursue you
Each morning and night.
May misfortune follow you the rest of your life,
but never catch up.
General
May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.
May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and a smooth road all the way to your door.
There are good ships,
and there are wood ships,
The ships that sail the sea.
But the best ships, are friendships,
And may they always be.
May you be in heaven a full half hour
before the devil knows your dead.
May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live.
May you have the hindsight to know where you've been,
The foresight to know where you are going,
And the insight to know when you have gone too far.
May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.
Here's to you and here's to me,
May we never disagree.
But if we do,
The hell with you,
Here's to me!
May your hand always be stretched out in friendship, and never in want.
Irish
May you...
Work like you don't need the money,
Love like you've never been hurt,
Dance like no-one is watching,
Screw like it's being filmed,
And drink like a true Irishman.
An Irishman is never drunk as long as
He can hold onto one blade of grass and not
Fall off the face of the earth.
If you’re enough lucky to be Irish...
You’re lucky enough!
