This is the number one noob question I've heard: does the material work?

Isn't it funny? The difference between a newbie and a veteran is the new guys ask how and the veterans ask why.

Well, that's a pretty good list. Here's my vote. I think that's an outstanding list, and it's worth addressing each question. Let's take them one at a time. If you've been around for a while, pick a question that hasn't been answered, start a reply thread, and answer it as briefly as you can. It'll be best if any responses to answers be treated in an entirely new thread.

If you think you have a good answer, go for it.

how do i set up a date?

There are heterodox answers to this. Zan Perrion would say he doesn't really, he just invites a woman to spend time with him. There used to be a thought that you should invite her to something cool that you're doing anyway. But here's a starter until you develop your own style.

1. Have a plan. Have something fun to invite her to. Avoid dinner and a movie--they're expensive and not that awesome.
2. Non-weekend dates are usually better. She's less likely to be booked.
3. Open mics are usually pretty fun.
4. It's best to suggest a date plan *when you get the number*. The number 1 reason for flakes is that the guy gets the number *for no reason*. Get her number because you want to take her to a fun thing.
5. A proper date has three elements: food, entertainment, and privacy, generally in that order. For instance: we're going to eat at my favorite diner then go see a comedy show then grab a beer then . . . (". . ." is your place or hers)
6. Go on a text date. It's a blast and it's naturally anti-flake. Here's how it works:

"I'm going to ask three questions. We both answer, and whoever wins has to buy [the appetizer, the first round, etc.]

First question: best place on earth to X? [you both answer]
Second: Best place in town to Y? [ditto]
Third: Best place ever for a first kiss?

Note--you should both win at least one round

Structure--how do I get good without canned material?

First, the canned material doesn't make you good. It's a Dumbo's feather. It's a way for guys with deep dreads to believe in something external until they realize they could fly the whole time.

My belief is that canned material impedes growth. The best opener is, "hey, how's it going?" I've never seen it's equal in terms of learning and, really, social horsepower.
