Match is now displaying "tips" to write better messages.

One of them is:

For every ! or :), the email response rates drop by 10 percent—no kidding! And a double exclamation (!!) usually precipitates a 25 percent decline in response, so curb the urge to add that wink.

You guys believe that?

Depending on the included messge, yes. Now if its something one of the here has written, I doubt it. ;)

I believe it.

That is something Match can EASILY track so if they are saying it, then yes, I highly believe it to be true.

I see ZERO need to include those in a message.

Just as I have said in the past if your message can be half as long and still communicate what is necessary then shorten it. Remember in grade school your teacher would tell you to rewrite your sentence again and again until it was extremely short. Same principle.

Your prose should communicate humor and feeling. Smiles are a crutch that tells the reader they should feel a certain way at a certain point in the message so that the writing doesn't have to carry that weight. I am guilty of using them. They are also a form of self validation. Kinda like laughing at your own jokes. Which I also struggle with.
