The 10 Commandments of Men's Jeans

Postby Guest » Mon Dec 28, 2009 8:11 pm

Jeans. A true staple of modern men's clothing. A good pair can be paired with sneakers, and a t-shirt for a quick trip to the store, or with a blazer for a first date. Simply put, jeans are everywhere, and are worn by most people, including our President, who was recently persuaded to upgrade his.

How then, do we see soo many people in funky pairs?
Below are the Ten Commandments of Denim, given from on high, to guide you, and a few links to some cool pairs.

1. Thou shall not attempt to pull off the “skinny jeans” that we've seen on a lot of hipsters lately. The odds are very good that your not one of them. So, just say no.

2. Thou shall not attempt the acid washed, super light jeans that went out a long time ago. They may come back someday, but until they do, hide them.

3. Thou shall choose pre-distressed jeans wisely. They are in vogue as of writing, and a little distressing on your nightlife jeans is fine. The ones you wear on causal Fridays, not so much. If the knees on the jeans are completely cut out, call Eddie Van Halen, and send him his jeans back.

4. Thou shall wear DARK denim, as it is your swiss army knife of the jeans world. You can pair them with a shirt and be fine. You can also dress them up with nice shoes, and a blazer, and look like THE MAN. This duality is harder to pull off with light colored denim, which is seen as more casual.

5. Thou shall choose jeans that fit properly. If you have to struggle with the zipper, and button to get them closed, they are too tight. If they fall down to your knees if you don't wear them with a belt, they are too big. Somewhere in between is what you're aiming for.

6. Thou shall buy QUALITY jeans. The $14.99 super saver specials, just won't cut it in the long run. Be not surprised if they fall apart very quickly.

7. Thou shall Not buy ridiculously over priced jeans. Unless the jeans in the $250 plus range do the dishes, mow the lawn, and fetch the newspaper, there is no real reason to buy them. There are way too many great jeans available in the $75-$175 range, to make the others really worth it other than conspicuous consumption.

8. Thou shall buy your jeans on sale. Yes, it is much easier to walk in, buy what you want, and worry about the price later. Considering that a good pair of jeans can last longer than your cell phone, some car loans, and most Hollywood marriages, signing up for email lists, and waiting for a sale allows for a better quality of purchase.

9. Thou shall turn your wash your jeans in cold water and turn them inside out when doing so. It sound silly, but it will help the color last a lot longer.

10. Thou shall enlist a fashionable woman's help in buying jeans. Most women really do have an eye for what looks good on you. Enlist an impartial female, a spouse, or female friend to help you in this. The results will be worth it. Trust me on this one.

Good post.

The cut of the jean is really the most important thing. Lucky brand fits me the best and they are very durable. They are also just the right shade of dark and they don't do all the retarded "worn" look.

I have a young friend that paid $350 the other day for a pair of True Religion, and the shit had holes in it, and his ass was hanging out the back. Shit is ridiculous.

I could have paid 99 for a pair of luckys, got a nice t shirt for 50, and had a great weekend with all that money, and still got the same girls he was gunnin for.

I really need to find a new jean brand that fits me well...Ive been wearing ONLY Abercrombie & Fitch jeans since way before it was actually cool to do so...but Im getting really tired of buying from there. It's like going to an after school activity at the local high school.

Never tried Lucky, where are they sold? I refuse to pay retarded amounts of money for jeans...those are adequately priced.

The jeans that fit me the best are Guess premium. They are in the $150 range, which is not cheap but not ridiculous either. I get them at the Guess store in the Galleria, and they have sales all the time too. Those and the Rock Revival jeans I got at Indigo in the Bishop Arts District (same price range) are my go-to jeans for dressing up. I am pretty thin though, so YMMV. There's no reason to spend more than $150.

I do have a couple pairs of Lucky Brand, which I like, but they are my casual jeans. I put them up there with Express jeans. I don't wear them to go out. I find that they stretch out and get baggy.

I also have a couple of pairs of 7s. I admit it was a mistake to buy them. They look good with a nice button-down shirt, but they are not worth the money.

If you don't mind spending around 70-150 go to the Buckle.

My favorites are MEK's and they are on the upper end of that range. The other jeans I buy from there that are under $100 I usually tear up and put holes in them on purpose. I just like the look and don't like to feel like I am dressed up. Another nice thing about the Buckle is they have their jeans separated nicely by shape. Makes it easy to choose from the ones that fit your shape and liking.

Guess has some of the better jeans I have seen as well. They almost always fit nicely and look good.

Banana Republic usually has some nice jeans (under $100) and badass slacks if you like that sorta thing. If I get back into the game I am seriously thinking of retooling my wardrobe with some kickass slacks.

Dude, once you've gotten in the Game, you never really leave.

You're so money and YOU don't even KNOW it!!!

Smirks - I think I saw Luckys at Macys, but I know for sure the Mens Wearhouse carries them now. Definitely check em out.

Rhody - I bought a pair of 7s and it was a big mistake too. I consider myself a skinny guy, but I also grew up in the 90s (JNCOs and Kikwear). So, even though I don't do baggy anymore I still want my nuts to be comfortable...

...and 7s aren't the jeans for that. I couldn't fit anything in the pockets AND one of the buttons popped off.

If I want jeans with some style, its the BUCKLE for me. They've got about 10 different cuts so you are sure to find one that fits you. Although I hate paying their prices. But chics definitely notice.

If I want nice plain jeans I got to PAC SUN. They have Bullhead brand that sells for $25-40.

Definitely take a chic with you, got to make sure your ass looks good you know. Or better yet, recruit some random girl while your at the store. ;-)

I prefer Low Rise Boot Cut jeans. They sit low, don't have much room for ass (which is good because I don't have any ass), more of a form fit upper leg, and a slight flare at the bottom (boot cut, duh.) I tried Levi's when they 1st tried to go cool, but they felt like my cock n' balls were in a vacuum sealed bad. I'm packin'...I need room!

Thanks for the feedback on my post. Wanted to post it up here first. It goes up on my site tomorrow.

Personally, I live in my Lucky 181's. Wore Gap jeans for years, and switched over. Lucky is runnign a 50% off sale right now, so you can pick up some great pairs for a good price. Only at lucky stores or online though.

P.S. Nordstom off the rack near northpark, and the Allen outlets are MONEY for great jeans at a reasonable price.
