How to pick a method?

With the plethora of material out there, and the way the different methods conflict with each other, how do I go about choosing the one that's right for me?

You have to experiment. You won't know until you try some different methods out and see which meshes well with your personality.
When I was big into the scene I was constantly trying new things out. You start to realize what works for you and what is true to you. Some methods are just crazy and won't mesh well with you. You will feel weird doing them and come off as not genuine.
So each time you go out you should always have some new piece of material to try. That is at least what I used to do. Once you figure out what works you can practice that method and get really good at it.

I recall trying all kinds of different material when first starting out. Don't be afraid to try different things. Like probably many here....i tried some things that made me feel really weird/creepy and never tried them again exploring different styles. You have to find something congruent with who you are.
There are things some of the guys do on here that would not work in 100 years for me because it's not congruent for me, but is a homerun for someone else.

I have a different view, although I'll give a big dorky w00t! for experimenting. But I think spoony's saying, I'm willing to experiment, but I don't want to shoot in the dark. Yeah?
First, everything that rises must converge. If you find someone out there who's way different than everybody--rapid escalation, full-bore routine stacking, entourage game, Rainman and others' stripper game, Amped's radical honesty--then ask yourself if it's really for you.
Second, regardless of what you decide to learn, stick with it for a while. A lot of guys stagnate because they learn contradictory things and bounce back and forth between them. For instance, direct vs. indirect. You start with direct, and get bad responses, so you move to indirect and get nowhere, so you go back to direct, ad infinitum. Stick with one person's method for about a month--that's at least 20 days, 30 minutes a day--and then think about moving on.
Last, these people want to know who you are. We can't tell you where to start if we don't know where you're at. For instance, Wygant and what's-his-face are all about role playing, tasks, and games. That's really fun. Badboy is super-intense. Style is a good all-around. Mystery loves the routines and mystical, psuedo-scientific discovery.The guys from Pick-up Podcast (highly recommended), have a sort of humanistic melange of styles. David DeAngelo is still pushing cocky funny. Ross Jefferies is still pretty heady. And Zan is a masculine-movement, fear-nothing, love-everything, nomadic kind of thinker. I don't want to sound like a big ol' trivia freak, but I'm trying to help. I could go on, but the more experienced guys will accuse me of DHVing :) Point is, it depends on where you're coming from. But make sure, whoever you pick, get their e-book or subscribe to their podcast, sign up for their e-newsletter, and stick with it for a month.
How about this. Start a new thread, ask the same question, but add what you think one of your strengths are. Why do your friends want you to meet their friends? Are you a good story teller? Generally affirming? A cocky bastard? Good at jokes? That'll help people answer your question.
Again, I'm worried I'm going to make myself into a shooting gallery, but here's some more names. RSD does good in-your-face game. (See: "black nimbus of power") Juggler is still doing good work with natural game. It's all about sitting down and starting talking. The NYC Vibelist (that's the nyc lair) has a lot of good niche thinkers. AFC Adam (Adam Lyons) is one of the more charismatic, generous personalities out there. He brags about being able to kiss a girl in thirty seconds, and then tells you why it's a basically pointless exercise. The London lair has 4,000+ members, largely due to his leadership. Heck, check out the LondonSeduction or whatever it is, the lair across the pond. You'll see some unbelievable pictures. A little-known guru called Johnny Saporno rolls with porn stars and says he can teach you how. Phenix down in Austin has some heady, incredibly effective game. Very, very true, very very accessible. There's an all-girl pick-up company called . . . X-Wings or something . . . Steve DeAmore, aka Steve Pikus, is into new-agey sexuality, now the same as he ever was.
Or, here's a good idea, go get the Pick-up Podcast, get the Deangelo interview series, listen to thirty seconds of all the interviews. When you get to someone you can't turn off, there's your guy. Also, check out everybody's youtube demos. The in-field ones are super helpful and sometimes inspiring.

Methods are overrated.
I agree with a lot of what has been said above, and just want to add something. What are your current sticking points? Depending on what those are, you end up trying different things.
Can you open? Attract? Build comfort? qualify? tease? kino? etc.

Tyler Durden is worth a look (his earlier posts from back in the day helped me a ton initially, and his recent blueprint DVDs are pretty good). The Blueprint content, IMO, is a rehash of great minds like Dawkins, Tolle, Robin Baker, Matt Ridley, etc. with Tyler's unique spin and experiences. These are some of the best concepts, and they mostly ring true with me.
Ultimately though, nothing beats going in-field and leaning with great guys. You find quickly that the 'method' is largely irrelevant. Mystery was the first to really spell out the basic framework components of pick up (Attract->Comfort->Seduce). 90% of pickups will follow that general path due to the nature of the beast (woman). The rest is social awareness and practice. Basics aside I'd say try to meet and sarge with top guys. Even if you only get a small time slice. Also read their field reports (I have attached some old Brad P report links - hope they still work. Have not researched new material recently).
Pylon - tell us which methods struck a chord with you at the beginning? I have always used the fastseduction forums as a wonderful source of reference as well.

But, I know I speak for PC and TD when I say that reading and studying is already assumed.
While, I think that reading and studying is important in the Community, I think that you can reach a point of overload or material saturation.
Pylon8, if I didn't already know you personally, I'd be able to tell from your post that you are absolutely a student of PU. Which is awesome, no doubt. And, as you know, I was very much the same way as you when we first crossed paths.
But, over time, I've learned that less truly is more in PU. I don't think it's necessary to spend a lot of time studying. I don't think PU is like college where you spend 3 hours studying per hour in class. I think it's more of a 50/50 type of thing. Eventually you study much less and sarge much more. As in all other things in life, real world experience typically trumps 'book learning.'
Now, I think that your suggestion about picking the guy that you lose yourself in when you read/listen to his materials is spot on 100% right. The guys that hold your attention are the guys whose methods are congruent to your personality, otherwise you wouldn't bother listening so intently. Now, just a warning, you need to understand the difference between being enamored with and identifying with a method. For example, I would listen intently to the guy with the porn girls...but is his method and tactics congruent with my personality? Not necessarily.
I think the goal for spoonybard, is to follow your advice of studying right now...but do so in a 'speed reading' type of way. Don't spend too long plowing through material that you simply think is crap. For instance, I got through maybe one chapter on a handful of different ebooks and podcasts before I chunked them and moved on.
Study, then make lists of the shit you want to try and to learn, then go out in the field and run them. It's easy to get caught up in the details of PU, but when you do you tend to lose sight of the bigger picture.
In my opinion, you only need to master a handful of things in order to be competent and successful at PU. Once you have reached a level of competency, it's up to you to determine how far you want to go down the rabbit hole.
