What Westfall calls "opening", I would call "attempting to open", and I would agree, if you are unable to attempt to open, then AA is pretty much the only culprit.
For the most part I concur with this, but I don't think the issue is reaching the hook point, but rather AA , or being inhibited with regard to attempting to open...
Of course it is also possible to initiate a conversation with a girl, and find her undersirable before you reach the hook point. Perhaps she DLVs herself by not responding in a way a girl you would desire would respond...
In which case, my advice would be if you want to get good at opening, the first step would be making attempting to open no big deal, you really shouldn't even take getting blown out personally or even consider it negative. Consider that a girl cannot really reject you based on a 1 minute interaction with you, because she cannot fully get to know you in that small amount of time--, it's not you she's rejecting it's your opener....
I recomend choosing openers that screen out girls you don't desire...
