Lots of people go there. It's a big university. I'm not sure what the student population is.

I don't think it is. It's a public school so if you compare it to a private one then I guess someone might say that. But I've been to other public school campuses (UT San Antonio, UC Boulder) and they're not that different. In case of Boulder I was actually disappointed.

Or maybe is all the construction that we've been having lately for the new gym. That made things really messy for the last few semesters.

I agree the construction can make it look kind of ghetto, but none of the girls I've brought here have said anything about it. There are a ton of places on campus that are actually pretty interesting and romantic to take girls. It's what you make of it.
