Whats up Scorpion,
I did a noob mission on the recommendation of the Venusian Arts Handbook also. Here are some observations that might help:
-Follow the recommendation as closesly as possible, you will learn fast and retain your social intelligence in a useful way - 4 nights a week for 4 hours a night, for 6 weeks
-Get to the venue early, meet the staff (bouncer, bartenders, hostesses, whoever). Follow the 3S rule and open the first sets you see
-I opened a set with at least 1 female every 15 minutes - if I got blown out I'd open guys and just chat with them until 15 minutes came up again. If you run out of females, change venues. You will quickly see how Mystery Method group theory works by doing this - in less than an hour the whole room will know who you are and have a pretty good idea of what you're up to (the staff may even assist by social proofing after they get to know you some)
-For the mission it is recommended to concentrate on opening ONLY- some advanced PUAs say WTF to this idea - if you can escalate and close as a noob then do it. Personally, I concentrated on opening - when you do this you run through most of the different paths the first several minutes of an interaction can take. Later you can work on other things and specific sticking points
-Take advantage of this to get to know a variety of venues - I tried everything from clubs and bars that I had liked in the past (that often had few targets, many "pre-defined" social groups and where vibing or not could make or break success) to places that were pure meet markets (where the targets were numerous, friendly and hoping to be picked up)
-Captain Jack advised practicing opening and starting conversations with mostly guys for your first several nights out. Talk about sports, work, whatever. Doing this, you will get a better feel for how cold approach social dynamics work and learn to vibe with everyone, set off the leader of men attraction switch, and generally appear non needy
-The openers work fine - for your noob mission you should only use about 3-5 different ones anyway - take advantage of this to practice your delivery and get used to the 3 different types of reactions you get after any opener (positive - your opener or subcommunication worked and your set opens) - negative (subcommunication or open was bad - your set doesn't open or you get blown out) and neutral (no real reaction to open or presence). Just work on continuing basic conversation after opening for the time being, and later you learn about the rest of the things in the VAH (qualification, dhv stories, etc)
Welcome to Fight Club, good luck
