Define "Dress Your Age"

Postby Guest » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:59 pm

I have been listening to some recent stuff by Savoy and I am having a difficult time grasping the concept, "dress your age." I guess I should give a little info about me. I am 35, work as a manager of a movie theater (trying to find a teaching job right now), I wear a shirt/tie/slacks to work every day, and really don't fell like wearing that after work. I generally hang out with people younger than me (21-28ish). Recently I have tried the "peacocking" with jewelry. The only people who called me on it were the ones who were more my age and married. None of the younger girls or guys said anything at all. I have since toned it down a bit. Now I wear a thumb ring on the right hand, and either this bracelet or a silver ball type bracelet with a black leather rope bracelet (both pretty skinny), and occasionally a necklace. I usually wear jeans and my shirt type varies from polo style to printed button-up to graphic t.

So, what is dressing my age?

My suggestion would be the casual looks you'd find at places like J Crew. These looks can be done much cheaper, mind you, at other places. Just a good place to get ideas. As far as peacocking goes, it can be overdone...easily. Subtle accents go a long way. Keep it toned back and you'll be fine. Use brighter colors/keen color combos for more mature peacocking.

I myself am about to turn 27 and dress in a mixture of J Crew type look and Urban Outfitter...casual prep meets rock is what I go for. I'd stay away from the "rock" portion if I were you. If you want specific examples, I'd need to see what ya look like first. PM me if you want that.

The point of peacocking is to be noticed. If your older friends are saying tone it down it just means A: the peacocking is doing its job and being noticed and B: your older friends are trying to get you to conform to their ideals of how you should look.

When you dress to get noticed, there will always be people who call you on your look. I don't know how many times I have seen Mystery on video talking about a girl busting him about what he is wearing and his response to I hat your hate or what ever is always, "No you don't you're just attracted to me."

You will get people busting on you about how you dress. Fuck 'em. Dress the way you want. Just remember, if you aren't comfortable with your attire, it will show.

I'm gonna chime in here. Replace "dress your age" with "don't dress like an idiot". Just because you're 35 does not mean you have to wear khaki shorts, a tucked in polo short, and penny loafers. On the opposite you probably shouldn't wear girls jeans, big skateboard shoes, and hot topic t-shirts. Dress appropriately to your personality. I don't know you so I can't guess what that is. The most important things start before you even get dressed. Again, I don't know you so I'm going to pretend you're every other 35 yr old. Follow these steps:

Get a haircut.
Lose some weight.
Fix any misc hygeine issues.

On to dress.

Get yourself at least 1 nice sport coat that fits you.
Get yourself one good pair of form-fitting jeans.
Get yourself a good pair of dress shoes (no plain black Frankenstein boots that are so popular.) Good rule of thumb - if you think the shoes, jeans, and jacket make you look gay - buy it. Most 35 yr olds don't know dick about dress and misconstrue style with gayness. Go buy a GQ magazine and check out the latest menswear and buy something similar.

On to peacocking, one of my favorite topics. Most of you know that I am not currently active in pickup, have not been for over a year. However, in my prime I was the best peacocker on this board. I say this without a hint of humility. I would get opened a million times a night. The jewelry you showed is hardly peacocking. How often do you notice a womens jewelry? I never do. Because I don't care. Get yourself something that people actually notice and talk about and try to get your attention so they can hear the story behind it. I can't tell you what that is because it has to fit your personality. If it doesn't fit your personality you look like a bag who is trying too hard.

Note - If your hygiene is terrible it doesn't matter what you wear.

I am not trying to step on your toes here but get yourself a better job if you want a quality woman (women). Movie theater is a job for teenagers and outcasts. You're not an outcast anymore because you're going to fix it.

Again, I don't know you so please don't take offense.

dead poet, my advice to you is to re-read Lion's post and when you're finished, read it again.

what he says is absolutely true.

he is the best cock out there (by cock i mean peacocker :P) and everything he says in his post is on point.

one thing i would add is that when you go buy a nice sportcoat (suit jacket) go get fitted by a professiona, then go to a tailor and make it a perfect fit! 80 percent of men wear the wrong size jacket (usually too big)... you dont have to buy what theyre selling, but at least you'll know what your correct size is.

in addition, when shopping, find a hired gun that you think might be your type (the way she dresses, acts, etc.) and ask her to pick out an outfit for you. that way you can get an idea of what your type of women finds attractive, and generally speaking, what women find attractive...

Bump to Lion's post...

Read and then re-read, then print it out and tape it to your mirror so you can read it every morning...

Lion's post is excellent.

Here's my take. i'm 35 as well. take if for what it's worth.

like Lion said just don't dress like an idiot. You don't necessarily need to peacock... There are guys on this board that can pull off peacocking great and it's killer for them. Lion comes to mind, but it's congruent with who he is. He rocks at it. As you get older, peacocking also becomes more difficult to pull off. It will need to every part YOUR normal existence, absolute congruence or results will be unpleasant. IMO a 35 year old guy that is not in the arts/music/etc type of field that would be congruent with more obvious peacocking styles would get blown out if he was a Joe Blow corporate man during the day.(there may be exceptions but it should not really be the foundation of anyone's game at 35 that is worth debating) But don't mistake peacocking for being stylish....2 different things.

Now, you sound like your normal average joe which is fine. Take a look at Express Men or Banana Republic for jeans and going out casual shirts that sound like they might be a closer fit for you.
